Our Technology In Action
It's late and the radiologist on call is finally heading home after a long, 12-hour day. The four-doctor practice the radiologist works for is the contracted radiology provider for the local hospital and is responsible for ensuring 24/7 services.
Yet, instead of working throughout the night or hiring a dedicated night-time radiologist, the practice has enlisted Virtual Radiologic to cover the hospital's emergency room during third shift, allowing this on-call radiologist to reduce his working hours, rest and prepare for the demands of the following day.
An accident victim enters the hospital's emergency room (ER) in critical condition. The attending physician orders a CT scan.
1. The resulting digital CT images are encrypted and transmitted securely at high speed over the Internet to Virtual Radiologic's powerful Picture Archiving Communication System (PACS), which simultaneously downloads the images automatically to the company's on-duty radiologist's Web-based Radiology Information System (RIS).
2. This Virtual Radiologic physician accesses the CT work order from a "virtual reading room" using his or her RIS; interprets the images; and "types" a preliminary report using state-of-the-art voice recognition software. The advanced technology at their fingertips enables our radiologists to deliver high-quality preliminary reports with the fastest turnarounds in the teleradiology industry, on average between 15 to 20 minutes.
3. The operations center representatives and IT staff monitor the study request and are just a phone call away, 24x7x365, to resolve any issues in real-time.
4. The resulting report is then automatically faxed to the attending physician in ER back at the hospital. In a matter of minutes, the attending physician has the answers he needs to make a diagnosis and begin treatment.
